Sponsor Democracy

On December 5th this year Nigel Farage plans to march on the supreme court during the appeal over who can activate Article 50. This is a blatant attempt to intimidate the court and undermine our entire legal system. Many people have come out to condemn this action, even members of UKIP Farages own party. There are counter demos planned, but I do fear that this will only lead to violence and also it could be spun to look like people of the counter protest were also trying to say the courts.

.

So firstly what is the court hearing about?

The original case was about the government’s right to trigger the formal two-year process of leaving the EU without there being a vote in Parliament. The ruling means that MPs and lords will have to give their go-ahead before Theresa May can start her negotiations on the UK’s exit from the European Union.

On December 5th the government is appealing against the decision

.
The reason for this is that basically triggering Article 50 would eventually lead to the UK leaving the EU, which effectively takes away rights granted by Parliament, such as the right to free movement in Europe. The High Court ruling effectively defined the limits of government power by reiterating that Parliament is sovereign – it can create laws and only Parliament can take them away.

So what is sponsor democracy?

.

The general idea is inspired by Wunsiedel, a small town in Germany that in 2012 essentially duped a load of Neo-Natzis into raising money for charity. The idea is to sponsor the people who turn up at the protest, so for every 1000 people who turn up you donate £1 to a charity. The plan is to declare this on social media with the hashtag #sponsordemocracy the charity is up you, I am personally pledging my donation to Refugee Action, but you can pick whatever charity you like. The idea is basically to make something good out of something potentially bad.

This has nothing to do with brexit as such, nor is it related to how you voted in the referendum, this is about supporting democracy and the sovereignty of our parliament and justice system.
